Reading Room

Come read our books and materials on a variety of topics related to death and dying and ways to mark this time. We've gathered these resources to make it possible for you to more easily find information and support, as well as to explore areas of concern. (We are not affiliated with any religious organization.)
Open during drop-in art studio hours or by appointment. There is no charge for using this room.
Resources

We have contact information for a range of people and services, such as eco-friendly funeral directors and cemeteries, bereavement counselors, deathbed choirs, humanist celebrants (they help facilitate non-religious funerals), rituals, and artists who focus on memorial and tribute work. We'll gladly review environmental issues with no "shoulds", but rather thinking through what choices will work for you - ANY funeral, anywhere, can utilize options that are better for the earth.
We don't charge for listing or accessing resources from this list. If you've found a person or service useful and would like to let others know, we'll be glad to spread the word here. We invite you to share ideas and experiences about ways you've commemorated a loved one, as well as to learn from others.

WRITING GROUPS
Writing Our Way Through...
Through the storms of the Fall equinox and into the waning days of Autumn, Pamela Powell will lead an eight-week writing workshop - an opportunity to express the full range of our emotions and experiences in writing. We will laugh, we will cry, we will write. This is a continuation of an on-going group that would love to widen their circle and include you!
Pamela has been leading writing workshops and teaching writing for over 20 years on both coasts. She is the author of The Turtle Watchers (Viking ’92), numerous articles, short stories, and poetry.
When: Friday mornings 9:15-11:15 a.m., September 17th- October 29th.
Where: Mourning Dove Studio, 485 Massachusetts Ave, 2nd floor, in Arlington Center. The studio entrance is just to the right of Punjab Restaurant.
Cost: $160 for eight sessions
To Register: Call 781-646-6708 or email: mermaidpam@yahoo.com
Information and education at home gatherings

Gather a group of friends and/or family together at your home. We'll share information and facilitate conversation and exploration of what practices you might find personally meaningful. Planning ahead not only makes it easier on your survivors, it also helps you more fully live your life NOW.
You may wish to see the PBS documentary, A Family Undertaking, as part of the gathering and discussion. This documentary, which focuses on funerals held at home, is also available through Netflix. We highly recommend viewing this as a way to begin a conversation with family members spread throughout different locations, for example.
Bereavement Counseling
Beginning this Fall, a therapist experienced with issues of death, dying and bereavement will be available at the studio to see clients during private sessions.
